Classroom Management

For my upcoming students teaching, I decide to use Point System. I had experience using this behavior system and I am comfortable with it. I can’t say this idea will work successfully during my student teaching but I want to give a try. But let me explain everything in order.

What is my mentor’ classroom management?

Mr. Rice starts his class time from the short activities to “Warm Up”. During “Warm Up” time the students allow to talk but quietly. For the students who demonstrate misbehavior during the lessons, Mr. Rice has a few different steps. He has two behavior charts in the classroom to keep track of students’ misbehavior. If students will get one certain amount of marks they will read a book or do some writing instead of working on project. I the students have to many marks they will eat their lunch in the classroom and along instead of a cafeteria. Mr. Rice calls it “Isolation Time”.

My classroom management system

As mention in the beginning I am planning to use Point System. So, how does my point system work? I will create a few very simple rules and I will introduce to the students. For their good behavior and effort during the lesson they will earn some points. End of the week if they have enough points they can have a free time. During their free time they can play art games on the computer and they can play art game in the classroom. If he students demonstrate misbehavior I will take away some points and for unacceptable misbehavior I will use Mr. Rice rules.

How does my point system align with my mentor’s rules?

My behavior system is not breaking or interrupting Mr. Rice classroom behavior system. My rules are more likely addition what he already has. It doesn’t break his classroom routine and for the most of the time I will be using his rules beside of mine because for the consequences I still will follow his rules and for the reward I have my own. For example, for quite bad behavior the students will have “Isolation Time” and for the reward, they can have free time and play art games.

Discussion with my mentor about my classroom behavior checklist

When I created my checklist I thought I did pretty good job and seems like it aligns with my mentor’s rules perfectly. So, when I went to show my checklist to my mentor, he had some questions that I couldn’t answer. Then from our discussion I understood that my checklist needs some improvement. I think, I have a right idea but I need to improve my checklist because many things in there is not clear and it might cause that the students will be confuse or will be hard for them to follow these rules. In a video bellow I demonstrated more details about how did my checklist look in the beginning, my conversation with my mentor, and what did I add to my checklist.

As you see, after meeting with my mentor, I did some changes in my checklist. Mr. Rice suggestions helped to make my checklist more clear and understandable for everybody. Once again, I would like to say that my classroom management doesn’t affect Mr. Rice classroom routine it will be just addition to his rules that I could use during my students teaching.
