Planning Assessments
Traditionally, we have used assessments to measure how much our students have learned up to a particular point in time. This is called "assessment of learning" — or what we use to see whether our students are meeting standards set by the state, the district, or the classroom teacher. These summative assessments are conducted after a unit or certain time period to determine how much learning has taken place. Although assessments of learning are important if we are to ascribe grades to students and provide accountability, teachers should also focus more on assessment for learning. These types of assessment — formative assessments — support learning during the learning process.
Objective
Apply visual elements and principles of art to create artwork.
Informal Assessment
In the beginning of the lesson, I would use informal assessment to see what know
about the elements and principles of art. I would provide them pictures then I would ask students examine the images. I would ask them: What can they tell about each photo? What stands out in each image? How does each image help explain the elements or principle?
Performance Assessment
After the introduction to the visual elements and principles of art, students will work on their art project to show how well they understand the content of the subject and how well they can apply this knowledge in their artworks. It can be any art project or that students drew or painted or examples of each elements that students recorded in their art journals.
Summative Assessment
There are seven elements and eight principles of art which cover the whole unit and last the whole semester. At the end of the unit, I will conduct a summative assessment that covers all elements and principles of art. This way I will know the students achieve their goals or they need more improvment in this area.
